Ten Things To Do If You Want To Make More Than 14 Cents A Month With Google AdSense, Guaranteed!

March 22nd, 2008

Today I read an article by Darren Rowse on ProBlogger where he discussed 10 steps to guarantee you not to make any money blogging; and what’s better than giving advice on what to avoid rather than what to do?

All advice is good, if you listen. I found his article inspiring and very useful; but I did not like the tone or how it sounded when read. The article sounded too negative and condescending. I am sure this article was written especially to give advice in the form of what not to do, which is just fine. I just prefer advice when it’s positive, when it is about what I need to do to succeed rather what I need not do, people are more receptive to positive advice and positive criticism.

I went ahead and summarized the 10 points this time in the form of what you need to do in order to make more than 14 cents a month with AdSense. I did not agree a 100 percent with everything in Mr. Rowse’s article so I re-wrote these 10 points in my own words and based on my own experience.

Please don’t take me wrong, Mr. Rowse’s article is very useful and to the point; that’s why I’m talking about it here. I also know this article is not written in Mr. Rowse’s typical style. Furthermore, in many instances saying don’t do this or don’t do that is a perfect way of dispensing advice, but you can’t go overboard with it putting everything in a negative sense or in a ‘don’t do’ sentence. You will see the word ‘don’t’ in the points I wrote below, but not many, I promise.

I hope you find these useful, and pleasant to read.

Ten Things To Do If You Want To Make More Than 14 Cents A Month With Google AdSense:

  1. Ad Placement - Keep your ads in areas where people’s eyes are drawn (i.e. close to content, pictures, etc..). However, you don’t want to bloat your website with ads to a degree that annoys your readers. If your reader thinks you only want to make money vs. writing useful articles they probably wont come back to your website.
  2. Post often, once a day is ideal - Don’t let the frequency of your posts reduce their quality though. I don’t post every day, but I try to keep my articles at a certain writing quality. This is a balance that you need to achieve between your blog and your personal life. If you post often, your readers will come back often; as in any website or money-generating business, whether online or off line, you need repeat traffic.
  3. Clear Article Topics - As in any good piece of writing, your article needs to focus on it’s main topic. This is a basic advice taught in every writing class in school and college. If your post is all over the place, it will confuse readers and fail at attracting attention. Write articles about things with commercial value, only if you have a sincere interest in the topic.
  4. Creative Post Titles - Make sure you use keywords that relate to your post in your post’s title.
  5. Alternative Ads - Set Google AdSense to show alternative ads. this is done on the Google AdSense page under the AdSense Setup tab. Alternative ads are used when Google can’t find any of their own ads to show. Don’t select to display Public Service ads. Here’s what Google says about Public Service Ads: “Publishers do not receive earnings for clicks made on PSAs”. You’re better off selecting the ‘Show your own ads’ option.
  6. AdSense terms and conditions - Don’t click your own AdSense ads, don’t break the AdSense terms and conditions like encouraging your readers to click on ads etc…
  7. Track your AdSense ads performance - Use channels to monitor how your different ads perform. This way you can find the best performing ads and capitalize on their success.
  8. Increase your Traffic -Pay attention to your readers. Write original content. Promote your blog.
  9. Show ads on every page, within the guidelines of Google’s AdSense policies.
  10. Diversify your ad programs, for example use Chitika and affiliate advertising.
