Protect yourself from identity theft on eBay and PayPal

February 12th, 2009

I have been using eBay and PayPal since the 1999 and have seen my share of spam, spoofs, phishing, as well as credit card fraud..

There are people in this world who apparently have a lot of free time, and they use their time in trying to conn Internet users. It is very important to be aware of how to protect yourself when shopping, buying or selling online.

I’ve compiled this list (partially from PayPal’s and eBay’s staff) on how to protect yourself from identity theft:

  1. When you log in to your PayPal account, open up a new web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) or a new browser tab (in Firefox) and type in the PayPal URL yourself to make sure that you are on the real PayPal website and not a fake (spoof) website.
  2. Before logging into your account, or typing any personal information (Name, address, credit card number, or ssn) make sure that the website address (URL) displayed in the browser’s address bar is the address for eBay ro PayPal. What you want to look for is the ebay.com or the paypal.com text. For example, https://xyz.ebay.com/123/456.. and https://history.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/1234.. are both legitimate websites
  3. Download the SafetyBar, a toolbar for Outlook and Outlook Express,
    which identifies known spoof emails.
  4. Get eBay Toolbar with Account Guard which warns you when you’re on a
    potentially fraudulent (spoof) Web site.
  5. Sign up for Equifax Credit Alerts for PayPal Users, a program that
provides an early warning detection system in the event of identity
theft. Find out more by visiting the PayPal Identity Protection Center
    at www.paypal.com/idprotection.
  6. Frequently monitor your PayPal and eBay accounts for suspicious activity.
  7. Frequently monitor your Credit Card and Bank accounts for suspicious activity.
  8. Visit the PayPal Security Center at https://www.paypal.com/security
  9. Visit the eBayl Security Center at http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/buying_safely.html
